Explorers Karting in Crawley

Brilliant night. Such good fun and something that Phil only runs every couple of years because it is expensive but 14 explorers piled into the minibus for a night of go karting.

Dave was the winner (beating his Dad)

Phil bagged second place

Rob was v chuffed to make it onto the podium in 3rd place

Thunder Ready Steady Cook

So look… if you ever doubt the ability of your kids to cook… you should check out what they can create when the odds are against them. We really stacked the deck against them with courgettes, cabbage, cucumber, instant mash, tinned beans and pulses and more  but still six patrols made six edible meals.

When they have proper ingredients they really fly.

Congrats to the Kingfishers who (amazingly to those of us who were supervising the cooking) made the tastiest meal for the judges.

Explorers Fake Wounds Special Effects Night

We pinched an idea from the scouts but the explorers did it with rather less mess.

Robert gave Molly a cut down her arm

Tom’s arm was pretty messed up

Mike got into character with the make-up

Check out all the photos here and there is a link at the bottom for the full size pics.

Busy fundraising weekend

Over 60 of us from the 5th helped Beckenham Round Table 104 run their fireworks this weekend.

image

eight adults helped Marshall on satuday night

image

nearly 60 kids and parents turned up on a very wet Sunday morning

image

these bins were empty when we started!

image

We left the park spotless!

Thank you so much to all involved. That’s our biggest ever turnout and easily the worst weather. It’s very reassuring that we get so much support from our families and members.

Thunder zombies

Wow but this was messy but so effective.

We mixed water and cornflour to make fake skin and we added toilet paper to the mix (papier mache style) to give the wounds body.

After that it was a matter of getting the colours right with food colouring.

Google will throw up lots of recipes and they seem to suggest at least adding glycerin and ideally using liquid latex.

Oh… and have fun with the non-newtonian fluid that is cornflour and water!

Jamboree on the Internet all weekend at the hut

Thanks to our volunteer network techs, we managed to set up cat’s cradle of Ethernet cable (there is a joke in there about cat5 cable/ cat’s cradle but I’ve not had enough coffee to nail it)

image

We have 20 or so PCs set up for JOTI

image

As well as a raspberry pi or two to do an introduction to coding.

image

And we’ve got a brand new map to record all our contacts

image

this is the closest we had to a glamorous assistant.

I hope that we see all our beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers at the hut over the weekend to take part. All info is on our website about times etc

jamboree on the internet at the fifth – clicky

There is a webcam on there and a live map will be up.there to.record our contacts.

We have invited local troops to.take part too and all local leaders are v welcome. Please introduce yourself when you.arrive and we will alway have coffee brewing and the urn boiling.

Special thanks to Trinity School for their donation of 10 PCs last month.

Thunder Cooking Competition

With some basic ingredients

Chicken, peppers, mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, bacon and some other cupboard staples

Plus the options of pasta, rice, potato or noodles the patrols had to conjure up some imaginative tasty food. Where i still have it, i have transcribed their menus.

Nick and Rob were the judges tonight.

The Kestrels were the winners and will be invited to represent us at the district cooking competition:

Loic the winning PL with his Patrol.

The winning dish… Chicken wrapped in bacon with sauteed mushrooms and sweet peppers with mashed potatoes and vine-ripened tomatoes.

Explorers at MESH VIII

Our explorers joined 150 others from across the new Bromley Scout District for MESH VIII (Mixing Explorer Scouts Holiday).

They took part in Medieval themed activities throughout the weekend and we even used our Tipi Stove for the first time. (Thank you Awards for All)
