Busy fundraising weekend

Over 60 of us from the 5th helped Beckenham Round Table 104 run their fireworks this weekend.

eight adults helped Marshall on satuday night

nearly 60 kids and parents turned up on a very wet Sunday morning

image

these bins were empty when we started!

image

We left the park spotless!

Thank you so much to all involved. That’s our biggest ever turnout and easily the worst weather. It’s very reassuring that we get so much support from our families and members.

Thunder zombies

Wow but this was messy but so effective.

We mixed water and cornflour to make fake skin and we added toilet paper to the mix (papier mache style) to give the wounds body.

After that it was a matter of getting the colours right with food colouring.

Google will throw up lots of recipes and they seem to suggest at least adding glycerin and ideally using liquid latex.

Oh… and have fun with the non-newtonian fluid that is cornflour and water!

Jamboree on the Internet all weekend at the hut

Thanks to our volunteer network techs, we managed to set up cat’s cradle of Ethernet cable (there is a joke in there about cat5 cable/ cat’s cradle but I’ve not had enough coffee to nail it)

image

We have 20 or so PCs set up for JOTI

image

As well as a raspberry pi or two to do an introduction to coding.

image

And we’ve got a brand new map to record all our contacts

image

this is the closest we had to a glamorous assistant.

I hope that we see all our beavers, cubs, scouts and explorers at the hut over the weekend to take part. All info is on our website about times etc

jamboree on the internet at the fifth – clicky

There is a webcam on there and a live map will be up.there to.record our contacts.

We have invited local troops to.take part too and all local leaders are v welcome. Please introduce yourself when you.arrive and we will alway have coffee brewing and the urn boiling.

Special thanks to Trinity School for their donation of 10 PCs last month.

Explorers at MESH VIII

Our explorers joined 150 others from across the new Bromley Scout District for MESH VIII (Mixing Explorer Scouts Holiday).

They took part in Medieval themed activities throughout the weekend and we even used our Tipi Stove for the first time. (Thank you Awards for All)

Thunder Spike Trolls

Tonight we spent an hour working with knives and with lots of care and concentration, we didn’t have any cuts! We’re halfway to making spike trolls… inspired by the Wonderful Whittlin’ Blog

Next week we paint them (and remember to bring a decent camera)

Explorer Pizza Making

Last Wednesday, the explorers made their own pizza dough and toppings and they all made something edible! Check out the photos below for a really successful evening, they even got their dough to rise.

Maybe they just need a few more washing up lessons but this was a great night for the leaders and explorers.

Wood Badge for Rikki Leaders

Today was an important day for The Fifth as three of our leaders were awarded their Wood Badge by Gary the Deputy District Commissioner. The beads are the symbol of completed leader training.

The first Wood Badges were made from beads taken from a necklace that had belonged to a Zulu chief named Dinizulu, which Baden-Powell had found during his time in the Zululand in 1888. When B-P was looking for some token to award to people who went through the Gilwell training course he remembered the Dinizulu necklace and the leather thong given to him by an elderly African at Mafeking.  He took two of the smaller beads, drilled them through the centre, threaded them onto the thong and called it the Wood Badge.

(apologies for the dreadful photo quality)

Adam, Keeley and Andy renewed their promise

Traditionally, the beads are transferred from one leader to another so Gary took them from around his own neck before awarding them to our leaders.

Andy receives his wood badge.

Andy’s late father was a leader at the 5th for many years, he was Assistant Group Scout Leader, Assistant Scout Leader and an Assistant Deputy Commissioner, today would have been a proud day for Dave.

Keeley (Akela) receives her wood badge.

Adam (bagheera) Receives his wood badge

Big thanks to Gary for coming over to do this. You can find out all about the history of the wood badge here (opens as pdf, right click, save as)
