Busy Half Term at The Fifth

Quick Update on what we’ve been up to

Those wires are going to be connected to a projector that we have had donated to the group. (Thank you!)

John has been installing covers for the lights, we’ve not had an accident yet but this will protect them from flying tennis balls and enthusiastic pioneering. John cut this all up, painted it and installed it to keep the cost low.

We spent an hour on sunday morning collecting litter – especially these annoying flyers.

A brilliant turnout saw it all done in less than an hour.

Thank you everybody who has been so busy for the scout group.  See you at the Race Night!

Looks good, doesn’t it? Half the machines were donated by Trinity School and we bought some cast offs from a local school too. We stuck some ram in them last year and they are still excellent machines.

We took off windows and they are running Ubuntu 12.04 and they fly. If you have an old PC in the house, think about switching to a Ubuntu to give your PC a new lease of life. Some German cities are giving our free ubuntu CDs to help their citizens keep their computers running for a bit longer.

Summer camp blogs

Apologies for the lack of a summer camp blog. The site had no mobile signal and there were no hotspots locally.  Hopefully you kept an eye on our Storify page that we’ve just updated again. Instagram pics uploaded occasionally when the wind changed and our phones got a bit of connection, here it is if you missed it (photos and videos to follow during the week):

Base Marshalling for St Christopher’s Fun Walk

The scouts and explorers donned their onesies and spent the day at Keston Marshalling Bases 24&25 of the St Christopher’s Fun Walk.

We were signing cards and giving out water as well as encouraging the walkers on their way. For some of them, we were at the 10-mile marker with only a mile to go.

Rob’s mum passed through our base and for some of us, her t-shirt reminded us why we were there.

Naturalist Badge at Creekside Discovery Centre

We popped down to Creekside Discovery Centre in Deptford on Saturday to earn the Naturalist Activity Badge.

After an introduction to the centre and its work from Natalie, our guide…

the scouts set off for some mapping of the creek.

Then we pulled on our waders to explore the creek.

We walked up the creek and back down again while Natalie taught us all about the wildlife that lived there.

We finished off with some fishing and caught a Chinese Mitten Crab and a stickleback

Now it’s just fingers crossed that the badges arrive in time to give out this week!

Thanks to Sam and Don for coming on the trip and making it happen.
